Chamber Music Greats: Ulverston International Music Festival: Wednesday 14 June: 7.30pm: Coronation Hall

Anthony Hewitt joins the Castalian String Quartet for this performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor. The Quintet is one of Shostakovich’s most popular works and the critics were unstinting in their praise after its premiere in 1940.

Schumann’s Op.41 – completed a century prior in 1842 – is his only contribution to the string quartet genre, written a in a year of chamber music composition and dedicated to Mendelssohn. Breaching the gap between the two larger works, Webern’s 6 Bagatelles (1911-13) represent the tonal shift towards absolute Serialism by the Second Viennese School in the early 20th century.

‘The Castalian Quartet has a reputation for creating an impact’ – Bachtrack

‘The excellent British pianist Anthony Hewitt played with fleet technique, impressive clarity and a wide range of tonal colours…an exciting rendition’ – The New York Times

Tickets for this brilliant performance are £19 Balcony / £16 Front Stalls / £13 Rear Stalls.
