Our annual string and piano chamber music concert is an opportunity to delve deeper into a rich repertoire and present great works not yet heard at the Festival.
Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E flat has an abundance of piano solos and virtuosic passage-work that make it more akin to a piano concerto – and particularly popular with pianists!
Mahler’s Piano Quartet was written while he was still a student at the Vienna Conservatory, however in its passionate romanticism evoking contemporary Viennese life, it is so much more than a mere exercise.
Only the first movement survived and sketches of a scherzo, which Alfred Schnittke ‘completed’ as recently as 1988.
John Ireland and Frank Bridge were peers at the Royal College of Music under Charles Stanford and Ireland’s Phantasie won the Cobbett Prize ahead of Bridge’s own Phantasie Trio.
Bridge is spoken of today as the teacher of Benjamin Britten and many of his fine works are still neglected today.
The Piano Quintet shows him at his best as a craftsman and is a true masterwork of compositional technique.
