John Harle, widely regarded as the Master of the Saxophone, returns to Ulverston with Steve Lodder after his spectacular concert in 2014. The concert was extremely well received due to John’s incredible performance complemented by his relaxed and at times humorous concert style.

John is one of the world’s leading saxophonists and the most significant performer of the saxophone in the concert hall today. With over half a million record sales within the classical genre, he has popularised the classical saxophone, bringing it to the forefront of the public’s imagination, whilst inspiring a wealth of new works for the instrument from composers of international recognition.

John Harle is also an Ivor Novello Award-winning composer-performer and record producer. He has written over 100 film and television scores, including the theme to BBC1’s Silent Witness  and the epic score to Simon Schama’s History of Britain. John is the recipient of two Royal Television Society awards for ‘Best Soundtrack’, and has been awarded four BBC Prom concert commissions. His Ivor Novello award for ‘Best Soundtrack’ was for the score to the Blakeway/BBC2 production Lucian Freud – Painted Life, directed by Randall Wright.

He was artistic advisor to Sir Paul McCartney for six years, and other collaborations have included John’s Terror and Magnificence album and tour with Elvis Costello. He has also been producer and musical director for Herbie Hancock, Ute Lemper, Lesley Garrett, Kathryn Tickell, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, Stanley Myers and Elmer Bernstein. .  Recent record releases of John’s music include the critically acclaimed The Tyburn Tree and Art Music, both with singer Marc Almond.

In 2017, his epic book, The Saxophone, will be published in major territories, including (in translation) China.

John will perform with virtuoso pianist Steve Lodder, pianist described as “a musical thinker of erudition and depth” by The Guardian.  Steve has worked with the elite of the UK’s jazz musicians, including: Andy Sheppard, John Etheridge, Annie Whitehead, Harry Beckett and Sarah Jane Morris. Internationally Steve has been a member of George Russell’s ‘Living Time Orchestra’ since the early ‘90’s and has toured with Carla Bley ,Steve Swallow and Ernestine Anderson. He met with John Harle also in the early ‘90’s and recorded the ‘Shadow of the Duke’, and ‘Terror and Magnificence’, alongside Elvis Costello.

Jess Gillam, 18 year old saxophonist from Ulverston, will make a guest appearance. Jess was the first ever saxophonist to reach the Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year and is mentored by John Harle.
